COmmunity Response to Eliminating Suicide
Rural Health supports the CORES program by facilitating a one day training course that provides participants with an introduction to the topic of suicide including community attitudes and the facts.
Suicidal thoughts and behaviours are explored through the use of simple models, discussion and role play. Strategies for understanding and assisting a person considering suicide are practiced, with a focus on utilising existing community resources.
The program provides individuals with a pathway to involvement in suicide prevention and skills them in being able to take this to the wider community.
The philosophy that underpins the program is:
The more people from within a community who complete the training, the less likelihood there is of someone at risk not receiving help.
It empowers communities to watch out for each other.
