Mental Health Nurse Access Program (MHNAP) Promotion & Education

The Mental Health Nurse Access Program (MHNAP) is a free service supporting those in the community experiencing a severe mental illness by connecting them with a Mental Health Nurse who will assist with coordinating services and supports including:

  • Liaising with general practitioners, psychiatrists, state-based mental health services and other allied health professionals to improve mental health outcomes and coordinate care
  • Assessing the progress of those experiencing a severe mental illness on their journey to recovery whilst providing additional supports as needed
  • Assistance and education regarding medication and management of mental illness
  • Referral to helpful psychological interventions such as cognitive behavioural therapy, counselling or other psychotherapy if deemed appropriate, and Other referrals or advocacy where needed.

Those accessing the program must:

  • Be over 18 years of age
  • Have a severe mental illness that significantly impacts their function
  • Have a GP mental health treatment plan (Rural Health Tasmania can provide assistance in accessing a plan and appropriate referral forms).

Rural Health Tasmania currently provide the program across several areas of North-Western Tasmania including Circular Head, Waratah-Wynyard, West Coast, King Island, Burnie, Central Coast, Devonport, Kentish and Latrobe.
